Here’s the thing. If you’re going bacon, you have to go all the way. Bacon-like has never been enough — and it never will be. This is why Bacon Bits will always outsell Fakin’ Bacon, and this is why it will always be better to fashion a pair of bacon goggles than wear a bacon-themed pair of Oakleys.

The idea of baconish accessories has my approval, but why would you want the bacon look without the accompanying bacon smell, or authentic bacon crackle? When they come out with a pair of Oakleys that have an aroma unit and built-in speakers, you let me know.

I can wait.

There’s only one other surf-forecasting app, GreenRoom Surf Forecasts, available today and it costs $2.99. It’s limited to spots in California, but you can get a seven-day forecast whereas Surf Report only provides up to three days. However, Oakley’s app is free and you can’t beat that.
I like the Oakley Thump MP3 line of sunglasses. I really do. Call me a dork, but the second edition worked very well and were really good for working out. Unfortunately, I think this ship has sailed in terms of usefulnacity vs. price and $569 for these Thumps with removable MP3 earpieces and 1GB is just wrong. Incidentally, the ones you see here are for Jamiroquai fans and only 500 will be made, which sort of explains the price but not the fact that there are still Jamiroquai fans about.

I’ve never actually seen anyone wear Oakley’s MP3 sunglasses in person. I’ve seen athletes wear them and I think Dog the Bounty Hunter wore them, but he’s been taken off the small screen for his racist remarks so he doesn’t count anymore. I think it’s a good idea, but why? Not everyone can pull off these sunglasses because they simply won’t fit your face properly. I guess there’s enough demand for Oakley to redesign these things.

The Split Thump are different from previous models with built-in controls that are cleverly hidden beneath the logo and the earbuds are removable so as not to look like a jackass when you’re clearly not listening to music. It’s sort of like the douchebags who wear their Bluetooth headsets 24/7 when everyone and their mother knows they’re not taking a call. The Split Thump will come in 512MB ($249), 1GB ($299), and 2GB ($399) models in black and white with varying colored lenses. No word on when they’ll be available for sale.

Oakley will be auctioning of a pair off solid-gold shades signed by Lance Armstrong. Bidding will begin at $9,999.99 on July 19 and run for 10 days.

If you’ve got that much cash lying around and want to give a little (or a lot, as it were) to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, you can try to win these puppies on eBay by looking up item #160135266040 next Thursday.

Here’s the full press release:

Oakley’s one of a kind solid 18K gold M Frame with certificate of authenticity signed by Lance Armstrong will be auctioned off July 19th-29th, coinciding with the final ten days of the 2007 Tour de France.

Hand crafted in jewelery quality 18K solid gold by prestigious jeweler Michael Dickey, this rendering features gold iridium tint lenses signed by Lance Armstrong and is one of only two in existence. The unique sculpture replicates the frame design worn by Armstrong in seven Tour de France championship victories.

As the group makes their final sprint down the Champs-Elysees on Sunday, July 29th, the auction will close at 17:26 CEST (5:26pm Paris time).

All proceeds will go directly to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

“For nearly 20 years, Oakley has been there for me, on and off the bike,” says Armstrong. “Now, together with the company’s support and those who appreciate the performance of its eyewear technologies, we can help make a difference to millions of those who are living with cancer.”

Some gadgets are good-looking — chances are the look of your cell phone was a major concern when you went shopping.

Then again, some gadgets are ugly. Very, very ugly. We’ve found the ugliest gadgets ever made, so you don’t have to. Some you’ve likely seen before, others you thankfully haven’t. Just believe us: You’ll never take your iPod for granted again.

Vertu Signature Cobra

The fact that the price tag ($310,000… yes that’s a comma and not a period) isn’t the ugliest part of this phone should tell you plenty. Just spend a few seconds admiring the ruby-studded “Mug Me” snake glued to the phone. Thankfully, they only produced 8 of these. Meaning your chances of running into one are about as good as a slurp-ready Zune to play with in the wild.

Oakley O-ROKR/Thump

Oakley and Motorola tag-teamed for this case of misguided digital/optical convergence. Even with all of their practical shortcomings aside (imagine the decision you have to make when driving at night: do I keep my sunglasses on and drive nearly-blind, or risk getting a ticket for holding my phone?), these things are just plain hideous. These look like something a 7-year-old boy would think looks “cool”, and basically scream “I demand attention!”

Nokia N-Gage:

One word: ChocoTaco

Indicatear

You know when you’re running and you’re in The Zone and you absolutely positively can’t take a second to make it clear to anybody around you what direction you’re about to turn lest it ruin your perfect gait? Wouldn’t it be great if your head had built-in turn signals?

Ministry of Gadgets

Bang&Olufsen/Samsung Serene

At first glance, it looks like you’re holding a birth control compact to your head. At second glance, people realize you spent too much on an ugly phone.

XACT XQ2500

This wireless headset (it may look Bluetoothy, but it’s all landline, baby) packs the number pad into the earlobe-sized side. The end result sort of looks like the skeleton part one of those cross-section anatomy books that show what your insides look like. And each bone is numbered.

(via OhGizmo)

BusLink iBot Mp3 Video Player w/ Speaker

It’s easy to forget that steampunk-inspired gadgets usually look neat.

Techno Privacy Scarf

You know those old-time cameras that featured massive hoods that completely covered their operator? Well once a product shrinks enough to become mobile, that concept rapidly changes from necessary to stupid to dangerous to absolutely hilarious.

(via TechEBlog)

Ristretto coffee mouse

I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want to fondle all day is a mouse that looks like nutty stools.

Toshiba Bubble Helmet

360-degree immersion in Halo may sound cool, but balancing six pounds of Space Balls-chic hideousness on your head ain’t.

LED Pong Hat

If you’re going to stick an old-school video game on the front of a hat that looks like it was pulled from the streets of Moscow, the least you can do is make it Tetris.

Flower Power iMac 2001

Oakley apparently didn’t get the memo that their MP3-playing sunglasses, known as the Thump, are a flop. They’re ugly, feel weird, and are costly. But lucky for us, Oakley isn’t going to let the man get them down. They’ve announced a November 17th release date for their new sunglasses, the Thump Pro. Thump Pro is designed for athletes and performance-demanding individuals, who need consistent, clear vision at all times. They come with solid-state memory from 256MB to 1GB and can play iTunes AAC, MP3, WMA, DRM’d WMA, WAV, and MP3 music formats. Be prepared to dish out $249 for the 256MB pair and up to $349 for the 1GB pair. But how do they look? Better than previous Thump models, but they’re still pretty NASCAR.
