Pop open a couple of juice boxes, light some candles, and then fire up the old lamp to let Shatner’s voice and the Star Trek theme accompany all 2-3 minutes of awkward, lanky lovemaking.

William Shatner did have a part in the new Star Trek as it turns out. It wasn’t a major role like Leonard Nimoy’s, but rather a recording that Nimoy’s Spock would give to the younger Spock at the end of the film. It obviously never made the film but I somewhat wish it had.

Head over to TrekMovie.com to read the script excerpt from the removed scene. Just make sure to include dramatic pauses like Shatner to complete the effect. The scene is very nostalgic but yet logical to the story line. At the same time though, it’s also a classic Hollywood voice over scene and really doesn’t fit with the tone of the whole movie. But I would still like to see it.

We all know that the new Star Trek was the best movie of all time – I’m serious – but how about the upcoming Blu-ray release? Well,  Blu-ray.com takes Blu-ray releases and grades them on four levels: Movie, Video, Audio, and Extras. The upcoming Star Trek release scored a perfect five out of five in each category. Yeah, it’s that awesome.

Normally I would encourage you to jump over to the source website and read the whole review yourself, but the damn thing is over 4,000 words so let me summarize it for you: the Blu-ray release is tits. Buy it.

There’s two new Xbox 360 bundles coming your way, UK. To mark the arrival of Transformers 2 and Star Trek to DVD (and Blu-ray), Gem and Paramount pictures have put together these blurry bundles.

The bundles are largely identical, and both include an Xbox 360 Elite, an extra controller, and the movie on a USB drive. No DVD for you, friends.

Paramount hasn’t said whether or not these bundles will be released outside of the UK.

And if you do live in the UK, keep your eyes peeled because the release date hasn’t been revealed, nor has the the price.

I’ve seen neither movie, but I’m going to assume Star Trek is better, just because Transformers 2 is, by all accounts, garbage.

There was one race conspicuously missing from the J.J. Abrams Star Trek film: the Klingons. They were filmed, but the scene with them questioning Nero was cut for whatever reason. The good news is, in this day and age deleted scenes rarely stay deleted for long. Case in point, SpikeTV just revealed a deleted scene where we do get to see the Klingons, and they ain’t happy with Nero. This is of course a marketing ploy, since there’s a special edition coming out on two DVD’s and Blu-ray this November 17th.

Nerdy kids are smart, they develop loyal friendships, and they laugh hysterically at various factoids and inside jokes that most of the rest of society will never understand. Finnish company Patria Aviation Oy has developed a type of cloth that’s capable of working as an antenna for the Iridium network and GPS frequency bands, making it possible to actually create a communicator style system similar to the type used in ST:TNG.

The company said the most difficult of the process was choosing the correct fabric with the proper characteristics. Many fabrics change their electrical properties when bent, which would render the them useless as a antenna materiel. The material also contains an insulating layer that protects you from excess radiation coming from wearing an antenna as a shirt.

The first antenna will be made into a shirt, however there is no word on when this product will be made available (if ever) to the public.

Did you see Star Trek. You had to see Star Trek. It was tits. But if you missed it the first time around or you need something to do for your anniversary, JJ Abrams’ Star Trek will be re-released in 85 IMAX theaters this Friday.

The film is getting shown again because it was only available in IMAX for two weeks originally, starting on May 8th. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian kicked Star Trek out on May 22nd and IMAX films generally get a four week run. So it’s the right thing to do and we’re excited. The movie is great.

Based off of the Star Trek: The Next Generation design, these personal media players have a 2.8 inch screen, come standard with 8GB, and have 6 different designs and interfaces to choose from. All are roughly based on the famous LCARS interface, which geeks have been trying to get on their phones for years.

There are a few things to be aware of about this device though, 8GB of memory is a bit limiting in this day and age, frankly. The pictures on the website are all rendering, and the price starts around $349. They’re cool, but I don’t know if they are $349 worth of cool.

Here’s a new one: Star Trek cologne. Called Red Shirt, it carries the tagline “Because tomorrow may never come.” I guess if you’re gonna die out in deep space, you might as well smell terrific.

Provided you think “terrific” smells like the following (according to ThinkGeek):

Bright, clean and direct with top notes of green mandarin, bergamot and a hint of lavender (your hope), finishing with base notes of leather and grey musk (your smoldering shoes after you’ve been vaporized).

The cologne costs $30 for a 100ml bottle, which actually isn’t too outrageous by cologne standards. Perhaps someone will make a designer imposters version for less someday, though. “Is that Star Trek you’re wearing?”

The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia is currently running a Star Trek exhibit with all sorts of whimsical items from the various TV shows and movies. A few devices, in particular, look mighty familiar to present-day gadgets.

Please observe the two Engineering PADDs (personal access display device) in the above photo. I’ll be damned if those don’t bear a striking resemblance to Amazon’s Kindle and Kindle DX e-book readers. The PADD, however, is set way, way off in the future — circa 2375, according to the little sign there. It appears that in the future they have color e-ink, too.

Then below we have a Cardassian Data Clip, described as a “portable storage and data processing device”. It’s roughly the size and shape of a 2.5-inch portable hard drive enclosure.

And this “data display panel” could double as a digital photo frame or, perhaps more appropriately, one of those 7-inch USB LCD monitors. Except this one is much cooler looking and wireless.

Starfleet Communicator? Hello Motorola Ming. The Ming has a stylus, though, which Kirk would have lost on day one. “Captain’s log… I’ve… lost… my… po-king… apparatus!”

And last but not least, there’s the Tricorder, “an advanced scientific device used by Starfleet personnel” to monitor medical conditions and search for signs of life, among other things. Kinda resembles a wireless router, which is used to search for and monitor advanced scientific stuff like LOLcats and hot deals on Wolf T-shirts.

The Standoff Patient Triage Tool uses Laser Doppler Vibrometry — similar to the idea of laser spy microphones — can be pointed at several key places on the body in order to capture readings. This means readings from several people can be taken from a single position, and someone’s vitals can be taken even if the person is in a dangerous position — under a precarious piece of rubble or electrical line, for instance.

It’s still not exactly pocketable at 15″x8″x6″, but I’m sure it’ll find its way into may medical response vehicles. No doubt the technology will be improved as well, and they’ll probably add an encouraging beeping noise to it to make people believe it’s actually doing something.

Lucky cosmonaut and astronauts. Not only do they get the best corner office view ever, but they also have a legit version of Star Trek downloaded. The three men currently on board the International Space Station received a special copy of the film via NASA and settled into a dark node of the station to enjoy the show yesterday.

Michael Barratt, the American astronaut, requested the film before boarding a space-bound shuttle in March, said Ms. Cloutier. He told NASA officials that he was a lifelong admirer of the TV series and did not want to miss this latest big-screen installment while off-planet. It was beamed up to them – really – after being reformatted by NASA technicians in a five-hour procedure Thursday night and beamed up Friday morning.

I’m mean, what more can you want out of life: rides on a Space Shuttle whenever, pissing in zero gravity, and a downloaded copy of Star Trek literally out of reach from the MPAA. Life must be good.

It’s probably best to playact with this Star Trek Tricorder in the privacy of your own home. Please do yourself a favor and if you must spend $49.99 on this, keep it on a shelf somewhere and only play with the working sound effects and lights when no one is around. Sound good?

That is, unless you’re attending a Star Trek convention or Comic-Con and you’re surrounded by even bigger nerds than yourself who will appiciate the vintage Star Trek prop. Then, and only under those circumstances, should this be seen by the public. Deal? If so, the item will ship from Amazon on June 4, 2009.
