Best Buy
by Doug Aamoth on November 19, 2009

If you prefer warm, indoor shopping to cold, outdoor, middle-of-the-night Black Friday shopping, then you may be happy to hear that Best Buy “is bringing the excitement of Black Friday a week early this holiday season.” How is this possible? How can one retail store bend the fabric of the time-space continuum in such a way?

Need a dirt cheap and somewhat underpowered notebook? Best Buy has you covered with a $249 Acer laptop. Netbook, what?

Look out, Walmart. Best Buy is going to sell Modern Warefare 2 at midnight too. But unlike Walmart, Best Buy’s average middle of the night clientele doesn’t look like this. or this. or this. The line will start at 10:30 p.m. and at 12:01 a.m., you and a few other socially-stunted gamers will get a chance to buy the game. How exciting. If you must be the first to own the game, there is a nice little advantage to buying the game at Best Buy instead of Walmart though.

Last year, Best Buy created what very well could have been the first contest ever where the winner gets a $1000 gift card and a chance to shop at 4:30 A.M. Well, it’s back for 2009 and it’s just as cool.

With all the talk about the nook lately, you might have forgotten that this is ending up as being the year of the e-book reader. Just to remind you, pricing leaked today on the IREX DR 800SG reader.

It should be known by now that the Motorola Droid is launching on October 28, but according to these screenshots of Best Buy’s system, the retailer might have the phone available early on October 24. Now, the 24 is this coming Saturday, which is a usual inventory restocking day so just because the stores have them somewhere doesn’t mean they will be available for purchase.

We just got word that Verizon Stores are now receiving their BlackBerry Storm 2 dummy units and training is finally available for retail associates. All that should mean that the Storm 2’s launch date is quickly approaching. November has been the target date for a while now, but with stores already prepping for the launch, availability will probably be early in the month.

Are you stoked about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2? Dude, I am, but I don’t know if I’m willing to go out at midnight on November 10 to buy the damn game. If you are, click through for the full list of Best Buy locations that will be open to support your gaming addiction.

So we know that Best Buy is going to be the only place you can score the Nokia Booklet in the US. Cool, but it seems that the 3G netbook might be sold its full retail of $600 instead of being subsidized by a carrier, which kind of kills any appeal it might have. And don’t forget you’ll have to get a wireless data plan too if you wanna use the 3G capabilities.

A postal service supervisor working at a Minneapolis mail distribution center “has admitted taking nearly 16,000 Best Buy reward certificates and using them to buy almost $200,000 in merchandise” between June 2007 and October 2008, according to the Star Tribune.

Best Buy has a nice little deal going on with Blu-ray movies right now and you already know what it is if you read the headline. But there is some good news and some bad news with the deal though.

Best Buy has our backs. No one likes mail-in rebates and so the retailer is going to sell the Sprint HTC Hero for $180 out the door with a two-year blood oath.

Sprint Stores however will sell it too you for $280 and hand you a $100 MIR. But just like with the Palm Pre, you’re not going to have to deal with those shenanigans at Best Buy Mobile who is also the exclusive retailer to have the HTC Hero. So yeah, why would you buy one at a Sprint Store?

Amazon also leaks Zune HD pricing

Now that Amazon is showing the same exact pricing structure for the Zune HD as Best Buy, it’s a pretty safe bet that these are the correct prices. Let’s just go ahead and call the prices unofficial official, m’kay?

SonySony’s rule-breaking VAIO W netbook (1366×768 resolution screen paired with Atom N280 chip) is now available for pre-order at BestBuy.com if you’d prefer to order it there instead of directly through Sony or some other retailer.

Palm Pre at Best Buy for $99 – Update

99-pre-bby-mobileThe internet is all aflutter with stories rolling in concerning the Palm Pre being sold for $99 with a two-year contract at neighborhood Best Buy locations. Although the Pre is nowhere to be found on Best Buy’s website, here’s an in-store photo from PreCentral.net for your enjoyment.

Not a bad deal at all, considering the $99 price is out the door — no rebates or anything like that.

Looks like you’ll have to actually get in the car and go to the store if you want to get in on this deal, though, but maybe grab the wife and kids and make a day of it!

Update – False alarm, everyone. John Bernier is saying via Best Buy’s Twitter help line – Twelp Force – that the price is still $199. Now, you still might be able to get the deal if your local Best Buy hasn’t had the price changed or is feeling rather gracious. YMMV.

Well, could have been a senior manager—the job seems to have already been filled. Still, let’s talk about it. Best Buy recently posted a job ad on its Web site looking for someone who would be “he primary lead for the Best Buy’s mobile, social, and video marketing and media efforts to drive in-store and online sales, create sustainable word-of-mouth evangelists, and brand loyalists.” Yup, that’s what a senior manager of emerging media does. No soul required, it seems.

Best Buy and TiVo have worked out a nice deal. Best Buy is going to heavily push the DVR in all its stores nationwide and TiVo will produce a special Best Buy DVR and embed its DVR platform in a few HDTVs. This isn’t official just yet, but it seems like the agreement should help both companies.

Having trouble finding Onkyo products after all the Circuit City stores closed up? Yeah, sometimes we forget that when major retailers go down, some vendors suffer a lot too including Onkyo. Well, soon an underpaid Best Buy Magnolia Home Theater worker will be happy to demo and sell you products from the brand.
