Who has a Blackberry Curve, Bold, or Storm? Wanna iSkin case for it? Of course you do. The company is kind enough to giveaway a bunch of their custom fit skins. These things are nice too. All three skins feature MicroBan antimicrobial protection to keep the germs under control. The Storm skin has a anti-glare and fingerprint screen. The Bold skins has a leather back and the Curve’s skins come in wacky – yes, wacky – colors.

John already gave you his “quick look” on the 8520, but a second look never hurt. Take into account the fact that my main phone is the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and you can see why I’m anxious to give you my thoughts on the latest Curve to hit the streets.

It’s a budget BlackBerry that skimps on aesthetics, but manages to offer a lot of “must have” features that BlackBerry users have become accustomed to from other devices. Compared to the 8900, the 8520 is sans GPS and the 3.2-megapixel AF camera that’s on the 8900 is now a 2-megapixel variant on the baby Curve. Here are a few sample images taken side-by-side with the 8900. Video quality is somewhat similar, but the 8900 does a better job with color than the 8520. Check out the screengrab after the sample photos.

The capacitive vs. resistive touchscreen dispute has been more or less settled with the popularity of the iPhone and other lozenge-shaped touchscreen devices, but that doesn’t mean the loser has to just bow out. The resistive touchscreen is still useful for more precision work using a stylus; I doubt we’ll have capacitive artists’ tablets any time soon. But for convenience, the latter can’t be beat — unless, perhaps, someone were to make some sort of hybrid touchscreen display… oh, you say RIM is working on that? Great!

Me: A normal guy, no issues, really into BlackBerry Curves. You: A BlackBerry Curve with a similar build quality as the 8900 with a lot of class and great UI. Let’s meet for drinks, dinner, movie? Be prepared to spend time in my pocket.

When I ran that personals ad on Craigslist I didn’t quite expect the 8520 to answer. This inexpensive phone will cost $48 at Wal-Mart (!!) and about $130 on T-Mobile proper and comes in black and light blue. I’m going to put it through its paces for a few days and report back but from what I can tell they worked pretty darn hard to get this phone under $50. First, they took off the scroll ball and replaced it with a touch sensitive pad – sort of like a track pad – and definitely took some liberties with the backlighting and fit and finish.

Remember last year when everyone was stoked about the new touchscreen BlackBerry called the Storm? Oh man, the hype was huge. There was iPhone-ish lines, media coverage, the works. But then the first reviews came out and we all realized the truth: the phone sucked. It’s now a lot better thank to firmware updates, but the upcoming BlackBerry Storm 2 will hopefully recapture some of the original anticipation..

Short Version: Unless you’re shopping specifically for the Palm Pre, this is the smartphone to buy for Sprint customers. The weight is right, the speed is right, the OS is at the perfect point in its evolution.

Huzzah! Verizon knows what’s up. The prices of its smartphones have been slashed, cut, and discounted down to iPhone 3G levels. Every single smartphone – expect for the new BlackBerry Tour and Samsung Saga – can be had for $99 or less on-contract. This means that the HTC Touch Diamond, HTC Touch Pro, and Samsung Omnia are now only $99 straight up. It’s like Verizon is talking right to those feed up with AT&T’s shenanigans.

WiFi-enabled BlackBerry 8530 headed to VZW

Hopefully Verizon has changed it tune for good on WiFi. Generally the carrier doesn’t allow WiFi-toting devices to be sold with a Verizon Logo affixed – there are a couple of small Winmo exceptions- but it seems that the BlackBerry 8530 will be 802.11 b/g enabled. Not only that, but it might be the first Verizon BlackBerry to come loaded with OS 5.0. Pricing or availability info hasn’t been announced, but once those float into our tip box or RSS feeds, we’ll let ya know.

Last week Verzion pushed Slacker Radio onto the BlackBerry Storm. This time around, the BlackBerry Tour is getting the same treatment. Why you ask? Well, Slacker Radio has put a little icon within the app that links available songs to the VZW V-Cast music store. So when a tune plays through Slacker Radio, customers will be able to purchase the song right there.

T-Mobile announces the BlackBerry Curve 8520, available August 5 for $130

bb8520cAs expected, T-Mobile has announced the BlackBerry 8520. The latest BlackBerry Curve features an optical trackpad and not much else that the Curve 8900 already offers T-Mobile customers. I guess the media dedicated keys are cool and it’s certainly a first for the Waterloo-based telecoms granddad. Here’s what else you get for $130: a 2-megapixel camera, 256MB of RAM, 512Mhz processor, BT 2.0, Wi-Fi, and a 1GB microSD card (that’s it?!). BlackBerry Media Sync, which enables iTunes syncing sounds promising, but it still runs on EDGE. *sigh* I guess I’m really done with the BlackBerry on T-Mobile. Viva la Android!

Short Version: As it stands, the BlackBerry Tour 9630 is the best smartphone available for Verizon Wireless customers. It’s a mash-up of the AT&T BlackBerry Bold and T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve 8900. One would think that this would lead to the perfect BlackBerry, but it has one glaring flaw and it isn’t one that you can get over quickly, if ever.

Everyone, even your mom probably, knows that there is a new BlackBerry Storm coming soon from Verizon. It’s only a matter of time before RIM or VZW announces the updated 9550. CrackBerry just got a screenshot showing a curiously unannounced BlackBerry Thunder. Could this be the next Storm?

When the UPS man dropped off Crackberry user Kurpaige’s brand new Tour from Sprint, it was a matter of seconds before the gadget was in hand. The shipping box was torn to shreds, now little more than a pile of tape and corrugated cardboard. The paper packaging was thrown aside, and the Sprint-branded box delicately dismantled. There it was, in all of its glory: a Verizon-brand BlackBerry Tour. Wait, what?

BlackBerry Desktop Software for OS X coming in September (!!!!!)

RIM has been blasted for years about not have a native OS X BlackBerry application but that should stop in September when BlackBerry Desktop Software will be released. The program will do just about everything BlackBerry addicts expect with syncing of iTunes playlists, calenders, contacts, notes, tasks, along with adding and removing software. Plus, the app will be able to backup and update multiple BlackBerrys just like the Windows version has for years. Let me just say for all the Mac BlackBerry users, it’s about damn time.

I don’t get the fascination with gadget tear downs. I mean, who cares? It’s not like any of us understand what the hell is on the circuit boards. I say as long as the product works, lets leave it intact. But apparently like Internet loves herself some gadget tear downs so here is the BlackBerry Tour dissected while a terrible soundtrack is played in the background.
