Short Version: Samsung has put out another well-priced, nicely-featured camcorder in the SMX-F34. If you’re looking for a little more than a simple handheld flash memory camcorder but don’t want to pay top dollar for a high-definition video camera, this model deserves a closer look thanks to marathon battery life, good image quality, 16GB of built-in storage, and a 34x optical zoom all at under $300. The pico projection thing might be getting a little out of hand. Sure, the projectors themselves are cool, and it’s hard to say no to cute accessories like this thing, but with pico projectors planned for phones, media players, and now little camcorders, things are getting a bit… projectionable.

EverioYou can get the YouTube-friendly JVC Everio GZ-MS100 (see our review here) for $180, down from around $300 or so elsewhere. The camcorder features DVD-quality recording, a 35x optical zoom, and records to SD and SDHC memory cards.

Review: Flip UltraHD camcorder

Short Version: Joining the ranks of the Flip family, the UltraHD is one of the easiest-to-use digital camcorders on the market. This version features 8GB of storage, high-definition video capture, the ability to use an included rechargeable battery pack or off-the-shelf AA batteries, and HDMI output.

At $200, though, it’s pretty expensive considering its feature set.

SMX-F34Nice deal on this Samsung SMX-F34 flash memory camcorder with 16GB of built-in storage for $249. Normally selling for around $299, it’s currently priced the same as the memory-less version, the SC-MX20, which I reviewed last fall.

The new SMX-C10 and C14 camcorders from Samsung debuted the other day with some slightly vague specs. Are they high-def? Low-def? Just-right-def? Well, Samsung just forwarded us the deets, and I had to check whether they were talking about the newest camcorders or some they released in 2007.

It’s a little late to be announcing anything, since the things are already at Best Buy, but I guess Flip had better at least acknowledge that the Flip UltraHD and SD exist. We guessed that it was 720p and had 8GB of built-in storage when we saw the leaked pictures, and that’s pretty much what the news is. The price is lower than we expected, though, so that’s good news for all you on-a-budget video lovers out there.

samsungSamsung’s got two new portable camcorders coming out in July. The SMX-C14 will feature 16GB of onboard memory, expandable via SD while the SMX-C10 won’t feature any standard memory, relying solely on your ever-growing pile of SD cards.

Flip, makers of the Mino line of portable digital camcorders, have released the slightly less portable, but more capable Ultra HD. It’s chunkier than the Mino and has enough built-in storage that it can record a total of 2 hours of footage — the MinoHD records an hour of 720p to 4GB, so it’s a fair bet that the Ultra HD has 8GB inside. There aren’t any real specs available just yet, but I think we can suppose with some confidence that they’ll have updated the internal components to bring them up to level of the MinoHD. New video engine, possibly a better sensor, and all the other little tweaks. As for price, I’d put it at around $250, but that’s pure guesswork.

Sony’s TG5V camcorder is small, light, and expensive as hell

If you’re looking for a portable video solution, but don’t want to go the cheapie route (Zx1 or Flip MinoHD), these tiny camcorders are a good bet. That is, if you’re prepared to drop a Cleveland on it. “Around $1000″ is the asking price for this sexy little piece of kit, and to be honest I’m not sure it can possibly merit that. But let’s see what it has to offer.

Here’s a good how-to involving a car washing sponge firmly yet gently caressing a camcorder for some all-American in-vehicle video footage. The whole thing can probably be put together for under $10 and it doesn’t look like it’d take too much time, either.

The “budget” option from RED’s enormous modular lineup has finally spit out an actual moving image for all of us to see (autoplaying video, let it run through once). The 2/3″ sensor is far smaller than the original RED camera, but it looks like that doesn’t present a problem; the shot above was a 100mm prime at T5.6. Image quality and contrast look great. Now imagine that image at somewhere between 1 and 120 frames per second and about 10 times as big — shot from something you can fit in your purse. Assuming you have a purse.

Look at this clever little thing: it’s the Everio X, a 9-megapixel camera that shoots full 1920×1080 video as well as 10x slow motion. Here’s the meat:

* The camera is small enough to slip into a shirt pocket and at just 0.66 pounds is one of the lightest cameras that can shoot 1920 x 1080 Full HD AVCHD video;
* Shoots nine-megapixel (no interpolation) digital stills and Full HD video with 1000 TV lines of horizontal resolution – close to the theoretical maximum horizontal resolution for 1920 x 1080 high definition video for no-compromise images;
* 10x slow motion shooting plays back four seconds of recorded video over 24 seconds;
* Up to six nine-megapixel stills can be shot at 15 images per second – faster than what digital SLRs can achieve;
* Simultaneous five-megapixel digital still shooting while recording Full HD video – photos can be shot at shutter speeds as fast as 1/4000 second without interrupting video recording;
* Records video and stills to SDHC memory cards.

It will cost $999.95 and will be available in June.

Canon announced today that they are releasing a waterproof case for their popular “VIXIA” line of camcorders, enabling the camera to go as deep as 130 feet and take HD video.

Pros: Impressive picture quality, 1080p Full HD resolution, 120GB HDD,small form factor, good color in low light
Cons: Noise in low light. Pricey.

The JVC GZ-HD40U is small enough to go anywhere and can produce some very high-quality recordings. It’s about as long as a soda can and somewhat fatter.It weighs a bit over a pound and is comfortable to hold for hand held shooting.While the entire body is plastic, it feels well made and solid. There are very few controls on the camera, making its operation quite simple and straightforward. The image quality in well lit environments is stunning. Overall, I’ve really enjoyed using this camcorder.

Hot damn, I kind of wish I snorkeled more. I did it once and haven’t done it since. I gotta get back into it! Why? Because a company called Liquid Image is releasing a diving mask rigged up with an HD video camera, lights, and a microphone.

Canon just gave birth to 11 camcorders; five high definition models and six standard definition models. Let’s skip the dinner and drinks and get straight to the after-party, shall we?
