Currently the only 24+ MP camera Nikon sells is the $7,999 D3X. The $2,999 D700 sports the same FX-series sensor but is only shooting 12.1MP. Would the D400 supersede the D700 for the number two slot or would the new camera slide in under the $3k price only to leave the amazing D700 to slowly fade out?

Nikon does need to keep up in the megapixal race and hopefully, the D400 would be equipped with the same FX sensor the D3X has to keep pace with the 24MP Canons. Either way, if Nikon makes the camera detailed here, they will have a hot seller.

Endless and incessant rumors regarding Nikon’s next move make the world go ’round; they also help lower the price of the company’s existing line of cameras.

For example, you can now grab a D40X with an 18-135mm lens for around $819. Times being what they are and all, that’s still a fair amount of money, but it’s a lot cheaper than the $1,000 you once would have paid.

Newer cameras are also dropping in price. The D60, once around $700, can now be had for around $600. Even the D700 has dropped in price by around $200.

Building on the immense success of the Nikon D3 professional D-SLR camera, the D700 offers pro-level performance and an extensive array of features and innovations in a comfortably nimble platform. I’d say they’ve got a nice camera on their hands. Being a Canon man myself, I wouldn’t know my way around this beast of a Nikon, but I have to say I’ve got a serious case of gear envy right now. There are also a couple lenses available, an 85mm and a 45mm, both “perspective control” lenses, used for the tilt-shift photography that’s so cool right now. There’s also a new flash, but not knowing much about flashes I’m just going to say that it looks perfectly good (I’m still learning about flashes). We’re led to believe this scan of a German photography magazine article about the D700 is real. Having “been had” last week, I reserve the right to remain suspicious.

These are the specs that appear in the article. Maybe.

D700: D3-Sensor, AF-Module but no phone/speaker, only 95% viewer, 200-6400ISO, 5FPS (8 with MB-D10), pop-up-flash (power 11), dust-removal on sensor, EN-EL3e, 1076g, fsync 1/250, 1/8000-30s, one CF-Slot, grid in viewer optional, virtual horizon, little less fast to D3. Compatible to WT-4.

So, no 100 percent viewer? Did we lose a war?

Oh, and the all-important price: €2,599, or $4,094.

Oh, for the love of God. It looks like this alleged shot of the Nikon D700 is as fake as fake can be. It’s actually nothing more than a Photoshopped D300.

Now, that doesn’t mean the D700 itself is fake, but rather that particular photo is. A distinction without meaning? Maybe, who knows?

In case you’re wondering, 20,000 DKK = about $4300. It’s far more likely that it will be put at a $2999 price point, however; the $4347 would be if you bought it from Photografica in their currency. Oh, to have three grand to spend on a camera. Heaven is a warm roll of bills.

The photo first appeared on a Chinese blog. Perhaps Nikon has already starting manufacturing it en masse in China?

As a pretend photography hobbyist, I’m actually interested in this in more than a professional capacity. Where in Nikon’s lineup will this be? Will it replace a camera, or be an entirely new entry?
