Monsters under your bed? Yeah, me too. Scary, isn’t it? I hate going to sleep at night! You and I both need one of these six-foot Link statues for protection. Unfortunately, there’s only one for sale on eBay right now. You can have it, I guess. I’ll wait for the next one.

The Link Statue stands almost six feet tall and weighs almost 80 pounds. It ships from Australia, which is going to cost a damn fortune at $500 – unless you’re in Australia, then it’ll cost $200 to $300. That’s in Australian dollars, too, so to the US it’d be $437.25, which is still too rich for my blood – monsters under the bed or not.

The auction ends Thursday afternoon and is already up over $650 (US). I’m guessing the guy who’s selling it has a serious girlfriend now. That’s gotta be the reason. This would be one of the last things I’d sell if I needed extra money.

Are you a collector of rare video game ephemera and weirdo hardware? Then today is your lucky day! A weathered, half-functional, and almost completely unknown piece of Nintendo history has surfaced on eBay, and right now the bidding is at a low, low $1250 (plus $400 shipping & handling).
Computer Othello is one of Nintendo’s earliest productions, and their first arcade game. Like it says, it’s computer Othello, but the weird thing is that there were supposedly no US versions of this game made. And yet this one has a US power adapter installed originally. A rare bird indeed! Too bad it doesn’t work.

Selling at the time of this writing for just over $1700, this 1949 “toy” cost today’s equivalent of $400 and includes “a U-239 Geiger counter, Electroscope, Spinthariscope, Wilson Cloud Chamber, nuclear spheres model, a book on prospecting for uranium, the Gilbert Atomic Energy Manual, and Learn How Dagwood Split the Atom comic book.
Seeing this reminds me just how spot-on Fallout 3 got its look and feel. The retro look of this kit is amazing, and the fact that it’s in mint condition — well! Unfortunately I bet it’ll be passed from collector to collector at varying prices, nothing more than a commodity at this point. According to the seller:

THIS SET FLIES OFF THE RARITY SCALE BY GIGANTIC PROPORTIONS !!!!!!!!!!!

Alas, no kid will ever get to crack it open and start checking the cat with the Geiger counter. Maybe that’s a good thing, since the kit comes with RADIOACTIVE ORE SAMPLES.

Today’s bargin at 1SaleaDay is one of these kits for only $9.99. That’s a mighty fine deal. Hell, the lights generally cost more than that. The shipping is $6, so you’ll end up spending $16 in the end. But if you’re trying to sell your Grandma’s crap on Ebay to pay rent this month, it might be worth the added cost to ensure those nick-knacks look their best.

You just never know what you’re going to get when buying wares off eBay. You could be purchasing a box of rocks or a used government hard drive that still has security polices, blueprints of facilities, and government employee’s social security numbers. You just never know, eh?

Similar data was recently found on drives that where scrutinized for sensitive data purchased by three universities. Of the 300 used disks purchased in this test, 34% had personal, commercial, and government info on them. One drive even had the test launch procedures of Lockheed Martin’s THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) ground to air missile defense system used to shoot down Scud missiles in Iraq. (pictured)

Some of these drives had a basic format performed, but come on, if a drive has government military secrets on it, a power drill seems like the appropriate tool to wipe the data. Not only that, the hard drive should probably not be sold on the used market being eBay, Craigslist, or a fleamarket. Let this be a lesson to us all. If you have, or had, data stored on a hard drive that big brother or a terrorist would find interesting, don’t sell your hard drive.

They predicted that an online marketplace like eBay would make it incredibly easy for people trying to traffic in stolen antiquities.

One archaeologist has found that eBay actually helped to stop the traffic, rather then make it worse. While people have continued to purchase fake items (sometimes thinking they’ve got a brilliant deal on the real thing), the purchase and transport of genuine items has been slowed in general. Also, in many cases, people are knowingly purchasing cheap fakes for personal use, rather then risking buying the expensive (and highly risky) illegal authentic artifacts. Consequently, it’s become less profitable for looters to risk cleaning out real sites, and more profitable to produce fake items for the tourist and eBay market.

Bad news for me, I paid quite a lot of money for this crystal skull. To think it might be fake…

If you consider yourself to be a Final Fantasy fan, this one is for you. Awarded as the grand prize for a cosplay competition, it’s a custom PC with the artwork from the Chains of Promathia expansion printed directly on the side panels. Can you say “chick magnet”?

The case is a black Cooler Master case with the Chains of Promathia artwork embedded in each side panel, covered in gloss to protect it. It has two minor scratches (pictured) that are not over the artwork, merely near the edges of the panels. It also has a top access panel for sound, USB and FireWire access. It also has a black aluminum access door covering the front peripherals.

The video card has been recently upgraded to a 512 MB NVidia GeForce 7600 GS with dual monitor outputs. (DVI and VGA) Other than that, it remains exactly the same. This PC was custom-built by the FFXI dev team to run FFXI at a breakneck pace, and consistently ran the FFXI Benchmark tool with a score well over 6000 with the old 256-meg video card. It has not been benchmarked with the new card, mainly because we stopped playing FFXI a few years ago. It does, however, run WoW at well over 50 fps sustained.

I don’t know anyone who’s into FFXI enough to go for it, but maybe that’s just because I haven’t met you yet.

If you love your Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM – and I mean really love it – why not get yourself a miniature replica of it that doubles as a 4GB USB drive?

Like most things related to photography, it’s not cheap – current bidding is at almost $150 with three days still left in the auction. But can you really put a price on a tiny replica of an SLR camera with 4GB of memory stuffed into the adorable lens? You probably can, actually, which is kind of the whole point of eBay and the auction process in general.

The Illuminati are real, and have removed that proto-iPhone auction from eBay. The auction had been live for a few days before Apple contacted eBay, shutting the auction down before the proto-iPhone made it “out there.” The video was also pulled from YouTube.

Apparently Apple removed a similar auction from eBay last year, so you know it’s someone’s job at Cupertino to troll eBay/blogs looking for unauthorized sales, auctions, etc.

Considering there’s very little else to talk about, here’s a video of a family absolutely killing the final obstacle course in Nickelodeon’s Double Dare.

It's about time for eBay to reveal its fourth quarter income, revenues and all that to investors, and no one is expecting anything but bad news. The company's revenue, despite increasing competition from every angle, has grown for ten years straight, but it looks like that simply wasn't sustainable lately, and they're going to post a decline in income. eBay is philosophical about it, however, and knew that it was coming, so hopefully their investors are prepared (or have left already).

It’s about time for eBay to reveal its fourth quarter income, revenues and all that to investors, and no one is expecting anything but bad news. The company’s revenue, despite increasing competition from every angle, has grown for ten years straight, but it looks like that simply wasn’t sustainable lately, and they’re going to post a decline in income. eBay is philosophical about it, however, and knew that it was coming, so hopefully their investors are prepared (or have left already).

This last year has been eBay dealing with the fact that it may have essentially peaked in usage, or at least gotten as big as it’s going to get for now without major changes. The number of actual items sold has dropped year-over-year by as much as 10%, which is a big hit.

The cognitive scientist in me says that in times of scarcity, people are more likely to go with the sure thing — in etailers that would be Amazon — and avoid the “gamble,” which is eBay. It’s unpredictable by nature, even if it’s all according to a system. eBay will get their groove back, but keeping expectations low is probably a good idea.

Oh. My. Gawd. If I only had $5 grand lying around I might consider blowing it on this. One mospeada30 has put up what appears to be the entire G1 collection of Transformers action figures.

I have every single Transformer in this collection from 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, and the majority of the 1988 catalog (with exceptions, see below). In late 1988, I stopped collecting Transformers because I didn’t like the direction the toys were taking. Please. Plastic shell animals that crack open to reveal a very plastic-y robot inside? I lost interest pretty fast.

Because this collection is very big, *it is possible that some parts/weapons may be missing*, so I need to disclose that. I actually have most all the weapons/parts in a very large jar. It would take me ages to go through, and organize each piece with its weapons, catalogs, spec sheet, etc. So for that reason, I’m selling collection as a whole, and the new buyer is more than welcome to dive into that project.

All Headmasters have there, um, well, correct Headmasters with them. They are present with their vehicles and accounted for EXCEPT the white RX7 Headmaster dude. I probably have it, somewhere, in there. He was the only piece that didn’t have his correct Headmaster with him.

*In the picture showing the boxed Transformers, the boxed ‘WheelJack’ and ‘Mirage’ are Italian Transformers! I picked them up when I was in Italy circa 1987. Please take note of that.

Known missing Transformers that I do not have in this collection;

Red Alert – Autobot Fire Dept Lamborghini Countach

Misfire – Decepticon Target Master

Ram Jet – missing a left wing

What’s most impressive is that the whole thing looks pretty natural, with the slight exception of the side panel jutting outwards a bit to make room for the N64 controller port. It’d be a nice touch if the thing actually played Wii games, too, but alas, it’s just an N64 stuffed into a Wii console’s shell.

Take note, Nintendo: when you release Wii HD or whatever it’ll be called, please include a cartridge slot with various adapters for NES, Super NES, and N64 games.

This is pretty hot, folks: a kind of crappy domain, IP that is available online, and “press contacts” that probably consist of bloggers like us. Rock and roll, people. Let’s all pool a dollar and put these boys out of their misery.
