It’s me! And I can’t get it out of “Restore” mode. Be careful when Jailbreaking, friends!

For Help-Key this week (now on Thursday’s, just like LOST), I’d planned to show you how to Jailbreak a 16GB iPod Touch, the one thing the automatic Jailbreaking apps can’t do yet, but I ended up bricking mine. Fortunately, I found a video that details exactly how to do it, and it seems to work fine. While I continue to try to reset mine to factory condition, please enjoy the above video with a few tips from me after the jump.
Just went through a bit of trouble with the 1.1.4 firmware. I had to restore to the unadulterated 1.1.4 firmware and then restore from backup to get it to work. I used iJailbreak, which worked just fine. What I don’t show is a failed update, but if that happens to you just restore completely and use the breaker of your choice to crack 1.1.4.

If you’re like me, you’re putting off upgrading your iPhone to 1.1.4 until the iJailbreaking software is ready. But we might not have to wait long. We got in touch with a couple of the people behind the Jailbreaking software and they said they should have a method to Jailbreak 1.1.4 for iPhone by tonight. That’s less than a day after the update has been released. The iPod Touch should follow a few days after.
Either these people are Wunderkind, or the update isn’t that significant. We’ll keep you posted here!
It’s Jailbreak day here on CrunchGear, as another app has just been released, and it’s the easiest to use yet, as it’s an over the air updater for previously Jailbroken iPod Touches and iPhones, and the best part is you can do it without a computer at all.
If you’re iPhone or Touch isn’t jailbroken yet, this isn’t for you. But if you’re using a 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 Jailbroken handheld, this is the easiest yet. Using the installer.app you’ve already installed, you can now update your system software to 1.1.3.
A word of caution, not all current third-party apps work with 1.1.3, such as Summerboard, but it, as well as most others, should have compatible updates very soon. Hit the jump to get started. Read More

We’re hearing rumors around the inboxen that there will be yet another way to Jailbreak iPhones and iPod Touches released either later tonight or early tomorrow. It’s an OTA upgrade, meaning you download and install the app over Wi-Fi.
We’ll let you know when we know more.
Attention, iPhone and iPod Touch owners: iJailbreak for 1.1.3 is out today. It’s a fairly simple and straightforward way to upgrade to the 1.1.3 firmware while keeping your handheld open. It works on any Jailbroken iPod Touch or iPhone running 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. If you’ve upgraded to 1.1.3, you’ll need to downgrade and Jailbreak first.
The installation is automated and takes about 10 minutes with a decent Internet connection, and when you’re done you get all kinds of goodies.
Go and get it. [iJailbreak dot com]
Okay, so apparently you can attach this thing to the existing SIM card inside your iPhone and it’ll filter all the info that’s passed back and forth, effectively unlocking your iPhone somehow.
According to the rough English on Brando’s website, these are the features;
So if you’re looking to dick around with your “firwmares” without doing any software hacks and you haven’t upgraded to 1.1.3 yet, maybe give this one a shot.

Mac OS Xers can now get their jailbreak on. All the fun starts here.

The biggest problem I had with the iPhone, some readers will recall, was the actual phone portion. I thought it was a fantastic Web device and a super iPod, but the phone side didn’t tickle me at all. That’s why when the iPod Touch was announced, I was all over it.
The hardware is fantastic, and while Steve and company have announced that early next year third party app support would be launched, I really don’t have that kind of time. So I wanted to Jailbreak my Touch. And here’s how it works.
So, how about those Mets. They were robbed, right? So we had some lasagna last night. I made it with these freeze-dried noodle things. You just put the noodles in the ‘zagna and cook it up. They actually become soft like regular noodles and you don’t even have to worry about cooking them and putting them into the dish. It was really easy. Also, they have a 1.1.2 firmware jailbreak now, but you have to be running 1.1.1 to start it. I hope it doesn’t rain today.

Yawn. It’s not even a challenge any more. A few hours after its unofficial release — seriously, this firmware isn’t even out yet and it’s already broken — haxors have jailbroken it, peed inside its Media folder, and used the built in security as a hand towel. No details yet, but soon.

Tomorrow could mark yet another showdown between Apple and the iPhone unlockers. Firmware 1.1.2 “drops” (look, I’m using words that young people use!) tomorrow on iTunes and brings only the slightest of changes, including better special character support. Yes, boring, I know. The real fun is that it’ll probably re-lock, if not brick, jailbroken iPhones. That will lead to about a week of “we’ve almost cracked 1.1.2″ stories floating about.
The constant tit for tat between Apple and the unlockers just doesn’t want to go away. Maybe Android will convince Apple to open its phone, or at least not be such jerks about it.

To jailbreak your 1.1.1 firmware iPhone or Touch, begin by gathering the following tools:
Step 1 – Point your Safari browser on the Touch or iPhone to http://www.jailbreakme.com.
Step 2 – Wait.
Step 3 – Run third-party apps on your newly jailbroken iPhone or Touch. If this works, skip Step 4 and 5.
Step 4 – Remove clothing. Cover self in Lestoil (warning: may sting). Place Wombeast tail between buttocks. Marvel at couple with sense of wonder. Eat Pop Rocks. Drink blue stuff. Throw putty knife into the mouth of the Hudson River. Eat screwdriver.
Step 5 – Repeat.

13-year-old AriX wrote a GUI for jailbreaking the iPod Touch. That’s right — no more typing in weird commands and staring into space as your device gets bricked. I haven’t tested the product, but it looks to be fairly complete. Give it a go and let us know how it works.

The DevTeam so close to a fully-working 1.1.1 iPhone that I can taste here in my Brooklyn basement. Good on ‘em. Thus far they’ve Jailbroken the firmware and now have read/write access to the file system and can install AppTapp, which is absolutely great. That doesn’t mean you should try this on your non-AT&T iPhone, however, because they haven’t been able to fake activate it yet, meaing unless you’re running on AT&T you’re still kind of stuck.
