MWC 2008
Hello from sunny Barcelona
by John Biggs on February 10, 2008

Hola from charming Espana. I’m here at the Mobile World Congress and just got out of a quick meeting with Samsung. Look for more goodies tonight from Sony-Ericsson and ShowStoppers along with a picture of my distended intestines, brought low by tapas and Estrella beer.

I’m currently in and out of Wi-Fi and phone range so if you need to contact me SMS me at +972543563127. Merci!

Joining Samsung’s ever popular Ultra Edition series is the Soul, which is an abbreviation of “The Spirit of Ultra.” Everyone wants to appeal to the fashion forward or style-conscious consumer these days and admittedly the phones are getting much prettier, but do you really have to say that’s who you’re targeting? Hate to tell you, but the Soul will only be available in Europe starting this April. If you’re interested in the specs then read on, friend. I suggest you do.

ARM to demo prototype Android device at MWC, says source
by Peter Ha on February 7, 2008

While ARM and Google are both denying the rumors, I think it’s a safe bet that MWC is going to be centered around Android. It’s pretty much the hottest thing in the mobile phone world at the moment and we’ve yet to see any proof other than photos. Our intrepid Editor-in-Chief will be on hand in Barcelona to cover all the action. So stay tuned because it’s going to get a little crazy on Monday.

SE G-series leaked
by Peter Ha on February 7, 2008

11883.jpgHot on the heels of yesterday’s purported leaks of SE handsets is another one that’s a bit livelier. The G-series aka Compact Touch Series consists of two devices code-named Tyra and Josephine. Tyra or as SE will brand it the G900i is said to have a 2.6-inch screen, WLAN and a 5-megapixel camera. Josephine aka G700i also has the same screen size, but is sans WLAN and is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera. It may not seem like this series is any better than yesterday’s leak, but touch screens are always fun. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Two Sony Ericsson handsets leaked
by Peter Ha on February 6, 2008

Days ahead of MWC come more leaks and this time from the Sony Ericsson camp. Codenamed Alona and Bei Bei, the former looks to stir things up with a radical design. Ok, maybe not so radical, but it’s pretty cool looking for a clamshell from SE. The outer cover features touch sensitive controls music controls and display that give you all the normal vitals you’d find on any other device. Once open it certainly looks different with a white keyboard and recessed keys.

The other phone, Bei Bei, is pretty typical of SE and features a UIQ 3.2 interface, radio, 5-megapixel camera and the same Walkman software you’d find on the W960. We’ll see what Biggs finds next week when he’s in Barcelona.

Samsung G810 gets leaked

samsung-g810.jpg

I got a brief hands-on with Samsung’s G800 last year and now they’re looking to refresh the popular handset. Expected to be announced at MWC is the G810 that features a Symbian 9.2 OS and S60 3.1 UI. It features a 5-megapixel AF camera with 3x optical zoom, anti-shake, and face recognition. Damn, that’s nice. Also included is GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooh 2.0 and 150MB of internal storage for the GSM/UMTS/HSDPA handset. Expected price for the G810 is 580 Euro. Fat chance of us seeing this since the G800 hasn’t even landed stateside. But, then again, Europe tends to be the #1 market for handset manufacturers.

Ahead of 3GSM, or whatever it’s being called, LG has announced a 10.9-mm, slider with a 3-megapixel AF camera with a touch sensitive keypad. The KF510 is a fashion conscience device encased in metal with special metal gradation paint schemes, which is a fancy way of saying that’s available in red and black. Details are scarce, but the keypad uses something called Interactive Touch Lighting. Whatever that is. It’s reported that the KF510 will be available as early as next month for $330.

Motorola sneak peek from Mobile World Congress
by John Biggs on February 4, 2008

Looks like Moto is trying to tell us their new phones will have some hot TV action. No news yet on what they’re releasing, but I’ll be there in force to rock out to some electro beats with the Spaniards.
