Sony isn’t giving up on PlayStation Home anytime soon and PS Home Online Community Specialist Locust_Star has detailed the upcoming fall update, v1.3, and it’s serious business, people, or as Locust_Star points out, “This is the for real deal upgrade!” Yeah, sure, whatever you say, dude (or dudette).
In spite of Sony’s best attempts to conceal it, evidence of a PS3 Slim 250GB version has been uncovered at the FCC’s website. This larger capacity version will most likely be released this fall, after the buzz has died down around the recently announced 120GB version.
Sony went so far as to set up a fake company through which to submit the hardware. That’s dedication.
Now that Sony finally dropped the price of the PS3 down to $300 will you buy one? A better question might be: are you going to pick up a 80GB or 160GB PS3 because the Slim doesn’t support Linux? Sound off in comments on that last one.
We’ve just received the official images and press release from Sony regarding the PS3 Slim. The new SKU, CECH-2000A, will rock a 120GB HDD and goes on sale in NA, Europe/PAL and Asian countries on September 1 for $299 and €299, respectively. Surprisingly, Japan will get the Slim two days later for 29,980 yen. The 80GB PS3 price drops down to $299 starting today in NA and down to €299 starting tomorrow. The 160GB PS3 also saw a price drop of $100 and now goes for $399. The rest of the press release can be found after the jump.
Update: We’ve added a picture of the last gen PS3 with the new Slim PS3 so you can see the difference in size.
Gamescon is currently under way in Germany and Sony has just revealed the upcoming features for the PS3’s firmware v3.0. Changes to 3.0 are mostly cosmetic, but the PSN Video store will be invading the UK, France, Germany and Spain in November with further expansion in 2010. Those of you in the short list of countries just mentioned will be privy to SD and HD movies for purchase and rent.
Another announcement out of Gamescom reveals that the PSP will be getting a digital comic book reader in November and Marvel is on board to bring “hundreds” of titles to the PlayStation Portable.
The full list of features in 3.0 can be found after the jump. Read More
Looks like there will, indeed, be a PS3 price cut in the coming days. A circular has leaked, from FYE, that shows a $100 price cut. That puts the 160GB PS3 at $399 and the 80GB PS3 at $299.
Oh boy, kiddies. The PS3 Slim rumor just got a whole lot more credible. Kmart and Sears both have a product page live for the PS3 Slim. The Sears page even states the following
PS3, SLIM High-Definition Blu-ray player for the best movie experience. Free PLAYSTATION Network membership. 120GB HDD for downloading games, music, videos, and photos. Includes DUAL SHOCK 3 controller. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
Now, the page doesn’t show any pics but it does show a $299 price and a release date of 8/24/2009. That’s next Monday! It’s probably best to keep one of the product pages up in a tab and hit the refresh button every few minutes just in case more info appears. That’s what I’m going to do. Peter Ha however has retreated into a corner and is rocking back and forth while we wait for more info. It’s sad.
Here’s what we know about the Satin Silver DualShock 3 controller for the PS3: it’s silver and it controls the PS3. It’s available now from Gamestop for $55. When’s that white one coming out?
I like the Splitfish philosophy. Not everyone wants a dogbone-shaped controller or likes the way the buttons are laid out — personally I’ve never much liked the Dual Shock setup. I’m not saying the Splitfish is the thing for me exactly, but I appreciate having options. The latest, the Dual SFX Evolution, departs from the normal button layout quite a bit: the regular thumb buttons are organized in an arc around the analog stick. Bad for platformers, but possibly good for others (they say Madden and LittleBigPlanet - sure, why not?).
Microsoft might have scored an exclusive deal to keep Netflix Xbox 360 only and off both the PS3 and Wii. But if you’re willing to forgo the fancy UI on the Xbox, there is still a way to get Netflix on the PS3 and eventually the Wii too.
Maybe this explains why Peter hasn’t been around lately. It seems that blogger are being brutally murdered politely asked to remove confidential information whenever they write about the upcoming… well, let’s just say it isn’t the fat PS3.
I haven’t had any mysterious knocks on my door, but these guys weren’t so lucky.
It’s pretty obvious that you guys have interests outside of tech and gadgets just like the crew at CG. Yes, we’re deeply in love with our gadgetry, but we like to nerd out over other things, too. Or maybe it’s just me. I, for one, will be playing a slew of videogames including Battlefield 1943 (Xbox 360), King of Fighters XII (PS3), Pac-Man (PS3), Prototype (Xbox 360) and G-Force (Xbox 360).
I will also be catching up on some reading, like Robert Kirkman’s Invincible and McFarlane’s Spawn. I picked up Tyrese Gibson’s Mayhem and it was pretty boring. I’m on the fence about Avatar’s Absolution, too. I should probably finish catching up on DC’s Blackest Night series as well.
Looks like Amazon just dropped the price of the Uncharted 160GB PS3 bundle, from $499 to $449. Of course, as per the rules and regulations of the Internet, we’re now required to speculate that this could maybe mean that Sony is looking to cut the price of the PS3 across the board.
According to the above notice from 7-Eleven, Sony is requesting that all 80GB PS3s in Japan be pulled along with any and all displays. Pre-orders for all trims of the 80GB PS3 will stop on August 9 at 10AM local time. So that leaves the 160GB PS3 as the only SKU in Japan. Does this mean that the PS3 Slim is really on the way?
Sharp eyes have spotted a certain “PlayStation 3 Konsole slim” on Amazon’s German Web site. The listing, which has no price attached, is still up as I type this (around 11:30 A.M. EDT).
Remember that quote from Sony’s CEO about not lowering the price of the PS3 because they’d lose money on every one? Not exactly the truth. In fact, since the statement was made just a few weeks ago, it actually seems that the man was telling an outrageous lie.
I mean sure, when it was introduced almost three years ago, it cost a bundle, but according to new Sony statements, manufacturing costs gone down by nearly three quarters since then. And yet the cost to you hasn’t changed! Weird.
Sony held a bit of a rah-rah song-and-dance event in the UK yesterday that revealed a few more details about the company’s motion controller. It was absolute mustard. Chief among them: software for the new camera, the PlayStation Eye, will be able to “detect gender and even the age of the face, separate facial features such as the nose, eyes and ears, and even detect whether you’re smiling or not.”
