Well this is no fun. If you’ve been patiently waiting for the Vizio HDTVs that bring Twiiter, Facebook, Netflix, and Yahoo into you living room, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer. Santa isn’t going to bring one this year.

The HDTV sets were supposed to be out in July, but that obviously didn’t happen. CNET is reporting that the new launch date is January 2010. Too bad that Vizio couldn’t make the original deadline. We’ll no doubt see other HDTVs at CES ‘10 with similar social-networking functions. Vizio might get lost in the crowd.

Samsung and Vizio have been playing a game of leapfrog the last couple of years. It seems every couple of financial quarters, the manufacturers switch between the number one and number two spots on the top LCD sellers chart. But as of right now, Samsung is king of the mountain again.

Vizio’s Q3 sales accounted for only 15.7% of the US’s total, while Samsung managed to move 16.8%. iSuppli credited Samsung’s LED backlighting push for the higher sales. LED backlight means thinner TVs. The rest of the manufacturers, LG, Toshiba, and Sony only managed a 8.1%, 7.8%, and 7.8% respective market share.

But here’s the thing, only LG saw its numbers actually increase from the second quarter of 2009. Everyone else, including the top dogs, watched less TVs ship out. Of course that shouldn’t be a problem for the fourth quarter of the year as people pick up TV sets as household holiday gifts.

Uh oh, another vaguely political post on CrunchGear. As you already know, the Consumer Electronics Association, the trade group that organizes CES, is fighting tooth and nail against possible regulations that would see California essentially ban the sale of power-hungry HDTVs. This mostly affects plasmas because they consume the most electricity of the different types of TVs out there.

The California Energy Commission, the body responsible for the investigation, says certain types of TVs ought not to be sold because they consume just too much electricity. As a matter of fact, TVs account for 10 percent of all energy consumption in the state. Mandate that manufacturers get their act together, and create TVs that don’t require crazy amounts of electricity to run, and everyone wins: consumers pay less for their monthly electricity bill (consumers would save, on average, $30 in the first year by switching to more energy efficient TVs), the green crowd gets to feel like it’s saving the planet, California doesn’t have to spend money generating all that electricity, etc.

Well, one group may not benefit: the manufacturers themselves. Some of them are complaining that having THE GOVERNMENT mandate how efficient their TVs need to be will stifle innovation, raise prices (because they’ll have to change their manufacturing methods or whatever), etc. (I say, if not the government, then who, the “market”? Ha! Markets work when everyone has access to perfect information, among other things, otherwise things can get out of hand. See: this past year on Planet Earth.)

The Commission disputes the idea that changing energy standards will necessarily raise prices for consumers.

You should note that Vizio, the little company that came out of nowhere, has no problem with the new regulations, should they pass. Easy for it to say, seeing as though it makes only LCDs, which aren’t very power hungry.

Keep in mind that this isn’t a done deal yet. You’re not going to walk into Best Buy tomorrow and find that all the plasmas are gone. Should it even pass then I imagine it’ll take some time before it actually affects your buying ability.

Vizio just took the wraps off of its hot Internet-connected HDTVs the other day, but the company has a new Blu-ray player coming soon too. The $188 MSRP will probably get price cuts and sales to bring it down to a more “Walmart” level seeing as Blu-ray players have breached the $100 mark. But even around the starting price, this player might not disappoint.

The Vizio VBR100 is coming to market as a Profile 2.0, BD-Live player. That means it will sport an Ethernet jack for easy updates and can display all the interactive goodies that BD-Live brings. Plus, users can plug in USB flash drives to add additional content. We wish we had more deets on this spec, but expect a music player and photo viewer – DIVX playback is a possibility too. Expect the player to also the standard assortment of A/V jacks including HDMI, component, and digital audio out.

There is no reason why the player will stay at $188 for very long. The VBR100 should hit shelves just before the pre-holiday blitz, with a second, similar model launching right before Christmas.

Something tells us that we could be seeing one of Walmart’s Black Friday items: a $99 Blu-ray player. No, no, a $79 Blu-ray player. That’s more like it.

Widgets and gadgets are the latest trend to hit HDTVs. Vizio is upping the game by equipping its soon-to-be-released HDTVs with an impressive suite of Internet applications and video streaming sites. So much so, that this portfolio will place them on top of many people’s wish list as these TVs will be better equipped than a TiVo or even Windows Media Server.

Forget about Vizio being a mid-tier, Walmart brand. These features might make some people question why they pay a monthly fee for a TiVo. Owners will be able to stream content from Revision3, Showtime and Pandora for free, while also able to subscribe to Vudu, Netflix, Blockbuster OnDemand, Amazon Video On Demand and Rhapsody. Plus, the sets are able to work with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and the Yahoo Widgets Engine.

All this content should be easily controlled and managed with a Bluetooth remote that features a slide-down QWERTY keyboard. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing this feature finally becoming available. Hopefully similar remotes will soon be available from TiVo and Moxi as there is nothing more annoying than typing via an on-screen keyboard.

The HDTVs connect to the local network via either 802.11n or wired networking. There is no word on DLNA support, but we wouldn’t be surprised if that finds its way into spec list.

Expect the new XVT series to be available next month and start at $749 for a 32-inch. The series continues up in price as LED-backing and 240Hz options are added. The top of the line VF551XVT has both options as well as five HDMI ports for $2,199 and will be available this September.

We’re just hoping that the picture matches the impressive feature list…

The bargain brand has some new sets that should appeal to shoppers looking for a deal and those seeking high-end features. Really, the new models seem to have a bit of both.

The new high-end line, the XVT series, packs in LED backlighting (VIZIO calls it TruLED), along with 240Hz processing, and are available in 32- to 55-inch sizes. The M series packs 120Hz technology into a 1080p panel. Plus, this series is available in the color Java. Brown is the new black, btw.

The E series looses the high-end features but uses 20% less than the Energy Star 3.0 standard calls for. We’re just thinking though that this series boosts the treehugging features so that folks buying the least expensive model can justify their cheapness.

Vizio, a long time favorite brand of bargain hunters and geeks alike, has stopped slapping their logo on plasma TVs. Plus, there is no plan to order more once the current inventory runs outs. The cut is, of course, due to plamsa’s poor sales in comparison to the companies LCD sales. Which is, of course, due to poor consumer information and as bright as the sun’s surface showrooms.

Don’t worry, consumers can still order Vizio plasmas on the website if the local store is sold out, but once those are gone, the Vizio plasma will simply be a memory. Just like Pioneer plasmas. So that leaves Panasonic, Samsung, and LG plasmas to choose from now. Got it.

This time, new owners of special Vizio TVs will be able to watch Netflix movies with no additional hardware necessary.

This feature will be available later this year on Vizio TVs with the “Connected HDTV” platform that feature built-in wired and wireless networking. Netflix members will pay as little as $8.99 a month for unlimited streamed content and unlimited DVDs. Here is the full release:

NETFLIX ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH VIZIO TO

INSTANTLY STREAM MOVIES TO NEW HIGH DEFINITION TVs

Second Direct-to-TV Partnership Announced

Prior to 2009 Consumer Electronics Show

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2009 – Netflix Inc., (Nasdaq: NFLX) the world’s largest online movie rental service, today announced a partnership with VIZIO, the American TV and consumer electronics company based in Irvine, Calif., that will enable consumers to instantly watch movies from Netflix directly on new VIZIO high definition televisions featuring VIZIO’s new “Connected HDTV” Platform.

The announcement, on the eve of the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) taking place here, is the second in three days by Netflix regarding streaming movies directly to an Internet-connected TV without the need for a separate external device. On Monday, Netflix and LG Electronics jointly announced an extension of their year-long partnership to enable Netflix members to instantly watch movies directly on new LG plasma and LCD HDTVs.

VIZIO’s “Connected HDTV” platform is designed to complement TV viewing. At a single touch of the VIZIO customized remote control, viewers can access movies from Netflix from an easy-to-navigate, on-screen display. With built-in wired and wireless networking, VIZIO televisions with the “Connected HDTV” platform will provide true plug-and-play connectivity right out of the box. VIZIO expects to ship the new TVs to retailers nationwide later this year.

Netflix members pay as little as $8.99 per month for unlimited instant streaming and unlimited DVDs from a catalog of more than 100,000 DVD titles in more than 200 genres.

“VIZIO is a visionary company that has quickly become a leading selling brand in North America,” said Netflix Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings. “We look forward to a strong and growing partnership with VIZIO to stream content from Netflix to their expanding line of Internet-connected HDTVs.”

“Today’s consumer demands more than just anytime, anywhere access to content. They also crave variety, especially when it comes to entertainment, and it needs to be just as convenient as changing the channel,” said VIZIO Vice President Matthew McRae. “That’s why we’re so excited to be working with Netflix as one of our key content partners on VIZIO’s ‘Connected HDTV’ Platform to deliver unprecedented choice, control and convenience for HDTV viewers.”

More products rolling off the CES 2009 assembly line, this time from Vizio – and they’re not super slim televisions! With a total harmonic distortion of less than .01%, the VSB210WS features SRS TruSurround (TM) for immersive surround sound and is one of the first products to utilize SRS Labs’ TruVolume (TM), which prevents extreme volume fluctuations when changing channels or watching commercials. With its elegant piano black finish and subtle chrome accents VIZIO has designed one of the world’s most stylish Sound Bar and Wireless Subwoofer solutions on the market today. The VSB210WS comes equipped with a hybrid tabletop stand and wall mount bracket providing consumers the ultimate installation flexibility.

The advanced 2.4GHz Wireless Subwoofer is outfitted with a long throw 6.5″ woofer providing bass response that extends from 35Hz up to 80Hz. The Auto Sync function ensures the subwoofer connects wirelessly to the Sound Bar for convenient plug and play operation. Only a single cable is required to connect the VSB210WS to any flat panel TV.

The VIZIO VSB210WS Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer will be available in February 2009, selling for an MSRP of $349.99. The VIZIO VSB210 (without the wireless subwoofer) will sell for an MSRP of $199.99, starting in April 2009.

The new 55″ VF550XVT1A (catchy) LCD TV from Vizio looks like it’s got all the features that make buying a new TV worthwhile. With the Smooth Motion Video 120Hz refresh rate feature, this TV should look like the business if it’s anything like similar models I’ve seen. It also has SRS TruSurround HD, an incorporated sound processor, which I’m told actually sounds great. You could plug it into the speaker bar they’re selling if you don’t have a setup already — although at 55″ it’s big enough to use as a real home theater system so you might as well just hit up the full 7.1. At $2000 it’s a good deal for its size and features, although still far above my budget (cry).

They’re also announcing a couple smaller, low-power displays: 19″, 22″, and 26″ LCDs for $250-$450, the latter two of which are 1080p, though none have the 120Hz or SRS. Nothing is mentioned about the 19″, so we’re going to assume its old and busted. There’s also a new monitor, $450, 26″ at 1920×1200 and 3ms response time. I’d say the big TV is the catch from this announcement. They’re not on the main site yet, we’ll update with a link whenever they hit.

So it’s hard to say what’s going to happen to Vizio, Amtran, Proview, TPV, Top Victory Electronics, Envision, Syntax-Brillian, and Taiwan Kolin. Dare the courts ban the sales of these HDTVs during the important 4th quarter?

Silver TVs are out, black TVs are everywhere, and so Vizio is breaking the mold with its JAVA-colored Evolution line of LCD TVs. These two sets are based on the VO lineup and adds the different color bezel option along with slightly upgrading some specs. The 37-inch VOF370F ups the brightness to 500 cd/m2 and the contrast ratio to 1300:1 from the previous generations 450 cd/m2 and 1100:1; the 32-inch VOJ320F sports similar upgrades with 480 cd/m2 and 1300:1 tech specs. The 37- and 32-inch models should drop sometime this month in the standard Vizio distribution channel for $849.99 and 649.99, respectively.

vine, CA — October 21, 2008 — VIZIO, America’s HDTV Company, has
announced today four new high performance Full HD 1080p LCD flat panel
displays in 32″ and 37″ sizes. The VOJ370F and VOJ320F are the first
of the exclusive décor-colored “Java” product line with colored bezel
and stand treatments that integrate elegantly into contemporary
styling of today’s homes. VIZIO has also released two additional Full
HD models based on the popular VIZIO “VO” series of products. The
VO32LF-32″ LCD and VO37LF-37″ LCD are now Full HD 1080p, offered at
very competitive prices.

In conjunction with VIZIO’s recent introduction of their flagship XVT
Series of high performance plasma and LCD products, today’s
announcement of these exclusive décor color and FHD models
demonstrates VIZIO’s commitment to bring cutting edge styles, features
and performance to more consumers faster than any other brand.

“By bringing Full HD 1080p resolution to smaller screen sizes, but at
considerably lower price points than competitors, VIZIO is making
affordable 1080p Flat Panel TVs available to consumers with space
limitations,” stated Paul Gagnon of DisplaySearch/NPD. ”In addition,
VIZIO is keying on a growing trend among design-conscious consumers
with the Java series, emphasizing style and design along with
performance and function.”

“With aggressive marketing and buzz created by the LCD industry, Full
HD or 1080p has become a ‘must have’ feature for all new
introductions,” stated Riddhi Patel, iSuppli’s Principal Analyst for
Television Systems. “iSuppli expects the Full HD penetration to reach
29% for North America LCD TVs in 2008, growing at a compounded rate of
36% between now and 2012.

Priced to compete in today’s challenging economy, the décor-color
“Java” VOJ370F 37″ LCD and VOJ320F 32″ LCD sets provide PIP/POP
viewing, 1920 x 1080 native resolution with an impressive 6500:1
contrast ratio with DCR, fast 6.5ms refresh rates, a wide 178-degree
viewing angle and high 500 nits brightness.

VIZIO’s updated VO series 37″ VO37LF and 32″ VO32LF LCD sets provide
Full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution with an impressive 6500:1
contrast ratio with DCR, fast 6.5ms refresh rates, a wide 178-degree
viewing angle and high 500 nits brightness.

All four new models provide three HDMI v1.3 inputs, two on the rear
panel and a third on the HD Game port located on the side of the set.
The HD Game Port offers quick connections for external devices with
HDMI outputs such as new game consoles and HD camcorders. Additional
analog video inputs are provided on the rear and side panels including
component video, VGA, composite and S-Video. Each model includes a
standard/HDTV/QAM combination tuner. Enhanced video performance can be
easily tuned with reduced pixel noise, improved contrast and advanced
color balancing and equalization from VIZIO’s intuitive on-screen
menu. Offering the ultimate in convenience, these models have a
detachable base to accommodate on-wall mounting and built-in speakers
with 12 watts per channel. SRS Lab’s TruSurround XT(TM) audio process
was incorporated as well to create a high quality surround sound
experience when watching DVD movies and programs broadcast in surround
sound, all with just the VIZIO’s two speakers. It creates a 3D wall of
sound that moves past the physical width of the TV so the listener no
longer needs to sit directly in the middle of the couch to hear the
best audio effect. TruSurround XT also lifts dialog out of the chaos
of sound and provides deep bass.

“In today’s economy, it is even more important for VIZIO to continue
to offer Americans the newest features with unique new styles at
extraordinary values,” said Laynie Newsome, vice president of sales
and marketing at VIZIO. “Capturing the pulse of the consumer to meet
their demand for the best-looking and highest performance value in
flat panel TVs is our focus.”

VIZIO guarantees that these TVs have no bright pixels or permanent
burn-in and backs them with one-year free in-home service and repair
along with lifetime tech support. Pricing and availability are as
follows:

For years, Vizio has branded themselves as low-cost HDTVs. The sets were, and still are, bulked-out at Costco and making their way into a lot bargain hunters homes. In fact, I think of VIZIO as the Costco house brand and that’s image the company is trying to shed. ONE/x, Vizio’s marketing agency, has begun showing off ads touting high quality and precision engineering, not the brand’s norm of rock bottom prices. Who knows if the campaign will change the mind of American consumers, but the firm’s upcoming wireless HDTVs might help.

They might be mid-tier products. but their generally great prices probably helped rocket the flat-panel maker to the top of Inc. 5000 list. The company reached the peak by having the greatest revenue per employee, with a whopping $1.9 billion total in ‘07. VIZIO was also noted #4 for Gross Dollars of Growth and #9 for total revenue.

While I would never claim VIZIO flat-panels are the top of the line, they generally are a nice set. If the company is racking in that much cash while keeping prices down, kind of makes you wonder why other manufacturers prices are so high.

If you’re like me, you’re extremely cheap. And that means you put off buying everything until it’s ridiculously low-priced or used. That means waiting a long time usually, but the payoff is that you get everything those other jokers got, plus more, for a quarter of the price. For instance: this Vizio 32-inch 720p plasma costs $600, exactly a quarter what my parents paid for a much poorer quality one a couple years ago. Plasma is no longer the leading technology, of course, but I’m not as much of a stickler about that.

The 42-inch model costs $800, which I think is a better deal. Both have similar stats and a 30,000:1 contrast ratio. If LCD is more your style, they have some reasonably priced ones along that line as well. These have the 120Hz smoothing technology, which I’d want to see first as some companies’ versions are better than others. Still, 1080p with 120Hz for probably a little over a grand is a pretty decent deal.

I had no idea this had even happened. Anyone else?

Irvine, CA – June 5, 2008 – VIZIO, the fastest growing brand of flat panel HDTVs in North America, announced today that it is aware of a suit filed June 2, 2008 in the U.S. District Court in Manhattan by several electronics company competitors alleging that VIZIO failed to enter into a licensing agreement for MPEG-2 video compression technology.

VIZIO’s suppliers have licenses for the MPEG-2 patents, and VIZIO believes that these licenses extend to VIZIO’s products. VIZIO has notified its suppliers of the lawsuit and expects full support and cooperation by them in the defense of the lawsuit. Accordingly, VIZIO does not believe that the suit will have a material adverse impact on VIZIO’s business.

VIZIO is working to resolve this matter with the plaintiffs and its suppliers, and it intends to defend its legal rights with vigor.
