Were you one of the 1 million Xbox live users that got banned yesterday? Well, you might not want to go buy that new Xbox quite yet. Some of the modders (you know, the ones who got you banned in the first place) are working on a solution that returns the firmware to an almost stock configuration, which would allow you to actually use your console again.
You’ve got to admit, Microsoft is having a good month. First, they release Windows 7. Now, they hit a rather remarkable milestone of 10 million consoles shipped in Europe.
Thank the gaming gods for retail competition. You know the Xbox 360 Walmart is running today, right? Yeah, Amazon is going to match it.
While the Nintendo Wii continues to have a stranglehold on console sales, both worldwide and in the United States, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are battling it out for the the second place position for year-to-date sales. Just a little over two months ago, Sony announced that they would be slashing the price of their game console, the PS3, to $299. Microsoft quickly followed suit, and in just ten days dropped the price of their most expensive console, the Xbox 360 Elite, to $299. Nintendo, who has sold nearly double the number of consoles worldwide as these two, decided to lower the price of the Wii on September 27th to $199: this was the first time since its inception that the Wii has had a price cut. All three console manufacturers hoped that the decrease in price would help them to increase sales and finish the year on a strong note. The results have been mixed: while all three consoles have seen an increase in sales, the PS3 has seen astonishing growth in the US and abroad, and has wrestled the second-place position in worldwide YTD sales from the 360. As for the Xbox, even in its upgraded Elite form it has seen only minimal gains since the price drop.
Well, well. It turns out the rumor was correct. Walmart is in fact giving away a $100 gift card with the purchase of the $199 Xbox 360 this Saturday. I don’t think you need help figuring out that this deal effectively drops the price down to $99. But if you need help spending your gift card, hit me up. I’ll help with that.

Halloween is coming up and if there’s one thing I know it’s that geeks love Halloween. The opportunity to hide behind a mask, to subvert the status quo, and to dress up like sexy nurse/sexy witch/sexy balloon boy is a cause for celebration. That said, we’re offering one Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 2 Limited Edition Console to the winner of our First Annual CrunchGear Halloween Costume Contest.

Microsoft did a good thing when it teamed up with the Children’s Miracle Network to give three hospitals Xbox 360 game rooms. I still think it would be great if they gave the fourth place hospital a gameroom too, but I think I already covered that. Anyway, the three winning hospitals have finally been announced after the voting ended on Saturday night.
Building upon the success of the custom ATI Xenos GPU that’s found in the current Xbox 360, Microsoft and ATI have apparently already struck a deal to continue using ATI chips in the next generation of Xbox consoles, according to Fudzilla.
Not-actually-real portable Xbox 360 anyone? Here’s the “Xbox 1080″ prototype from Carl Archambeault, an impossibly portable console with a slide-out LCD screen. Where do the optical discs go? Who knows? And what’s the battery life? Let’s say 100 hours!
Microsoft might have scored an exclusive deal to keep Netflix Xbox 360 only and off both the PS3 and Wii. But if you’re willing to forgo the fancy UI on the Xbox, there is still a way to get Netflix on the PS3 and eventually the Wii too.

Sorry, Wii and PS3 owners. You ain’t getting Netflix streaming despite other claims. Microsoft has inked an exclusive deal with Netflix to keep the movie streaming on the Xbox 360.

Apparently it’s not a matter of “if” Microsoft will bring the Xbox, in some capacity, to the wonderful world of mobile entertainment, but “when.” So says< Corporate Vice-President Shane Kim, at least; if you can't trust Mr. Kim, then who can you trust?
Ben Heckendorn is no doubt one of the greatest computer modders of our time. Doug just interviewed him and we have featured his work numerous times on CrunchGear. He’s back with yet another incarnation of a portable Xbox. This time around he used a newer Jasper motherboard and added more features like a built-in Ethernet, digital volume controls, and a flush mounted optical drive.
Microsoft just announced sales of Xbox 360 consoles have passed the 30 million mark globally, up 28 percent over last year, which it claims is the highest percentage growth in hardware sales of any console so far in 2009. In addition, the Xbox LIVE community has grown to over 20 million users, coming from 26 countries.
And these users spend money, too. In a press release touting the sales numbers, Microsoft claims U.S. consumers alone have spent $14.5 billion across all categories on Xbox 360 at retail, and consumers worldwide have downloaded close to 1 billion pieces of gaming and entertainment content from Xbox LIVE Marketplace to date.

There’s a very interesting article over at TeamXbox.com detailing some information about a supposed portable gaming device that Microsoft’s been working on. This device will apparently fall somewhere in between the Xbox 360 and the Zune.

Last week Fudzilla was reporting that Microsoft could be phasing out the Xbox 360 Elite in select markets while making it a limited edition model in NA and Europe. It all boils down to the current state of the economy. And it wouldn’t hurt the sales of special edition Elite consoles like the Resident Evil 5 bundle if the black Elites weren’t so abundant.
