Do you still own an original Xbox? Is it no longer under warranty? Tough cookies, then, as Microsoft has announced that no-longer-under-warranty original Xboxes can no longer be serviced. If your Xbox is still under warranty, then there’s nothing to worry about.

Soon you will be able to play GTA IV or its The Lost and the Damned expansion on Xbox LIVE for free. Specifically from Tuesday, February 17 at 9:00AM PST to Sunday, February 22 11:59PM PST, multiplayer service that usually required a paid Xbox LIVE Gold subscription will be free for owners of those games.
Not for nothing, but we did a post a few weeks back about how more and more of today’s professionals are from the video game generation. That is, the man in the suit behind the desk on Wall Street (what’s left of it) or in Foggy Bottom spent his formative years in front of an NES (or whatever), and can take some of the skills he learned there and apply it to the real world. Case in point, P.W. Singer, a Senior Fellow over at the Brookings Institute, who, in his new book Wired for War: The Robotics Revolution and Conflict in the 21st Century, tells the story of a high school dropout who later became a drone pilot, using his skill he accrued while playing Xbox. How about that!
Netflix streaming launched just a few months ago and already the sevice has streamed 1.5 billion minutes of TV shows and movies. The company stated that over 1 million Xbox’s have connected up with the service to stream content so far. There isn’t an official number of how many Xbox owners subscribed to the service exclusively for the streaming service, but I know of at least one: me. Only time will tell if the service already peaked or if there is still more growing room.
The Xbox1 came out in November of 2001. Four years later, November of 2005, Microsoft released the Xbox 360. So, should we expect a new Xbox eight months hence? In a word, no
Wendy’s, yeah the fast food chain that claims to be “waaaay better than fast food,” is having a promotion. They’re running a bunch of reverse auctions for the next two weeks and will be giving away Xboxes, ThinkPads, Plasma HDTV, cash, a Car and tons of other stuff. Read on to see how to win.
Here is a prime example of America’s incessant spending habits. They were fighting over Wal-Mart’s Xbox 360 Arcade Guitar Hero 3 bundle for $199, BTW. Insane. No wonder there was fatalities yesterday.
Conspiracy or not, Sony-owned Columbia Pictures movies are mostly good to go from Netflix to the Xbox 360. Initially the studio claimed that licensing was to blame for the restricted access but apparently the proper papers have been pushed ’cause most Columbia flicks can now be played with the notable exceptions of Walk Hard and Bad Boys. Chances are those will be available soon.
Kudos to Microsoft, which has tricked more people into buying the Xbox 360 then it did the original Xbox. Redmond has sold—well, is projected to sell through the end of this month—some 25 million Xbox 360s. It took the original Xbox, which launched in late 2001, five years to reach that number. Meanwhile, the plucky little 360 will hit that number a mere three years after its own late 2005 launch.
What I’d like to know: how many of these 25 million Xbox 360s are re-purchases as a result of the red ring of death? Like I said before, if my current Xbox 360 dies there’s no chance in hell I’d get another one. I’ll move exclusively to emulators—the older games are better anyway—and WoW.
Now that the NXE lets users install games onto the hard drive, space is premium cause these games aren’t small. Plus, the Xbox’s standard hard drive space for the majority of the past three years was a measly 20GB so you really should know how much space these games are going to take up. Full list after the jump.
Well what do we have here? Now that NXE is live for everyone, it seems that Columbia Pictures movies are not available for XBox Netflix streaming. Unfortunately there is no way to tell if the movie is going to be watchable on the Xbox streaming until it’s added to the queue which can be a royal pain in the ass. Quite frankly, this is lame and childish that these Sony-owned flicks are not available on the PS3-rival system. MTV Multiplayer blog has nailed down a few details and the distracting smokescreen is licensing. Bull.
Instead of adding another 10,000 people to the preview program like we did last week, we’ve decided to do something a little different: everyone who successfully applied to the preview program (and submitted a valid console ID) will be getting the New Xbox Experience sometime within the next few hours. That’s right…we’re hooking everyone else up with NXE a bit early. If you signed up and are not prompted, that means you did not enter your console ID properly and you’ll have to wait until Wednesday.
So yeah, this picture isn’t possible. Any Xbox 360 owner knows that you cannot sit the console on the HDD side. It won’t sit up and sometimes will produce a horrible, game ruining, scratching noise because it’s upside down! Oh, Radio Shack. When will you return to your random electronic parts origin and leave the low profit margin gaming stuff to the big boys?
Microsoft, it seems, is relegating the Zune to storage duty. A survey in the Zune newsletter mentions something about using the Zune hard drive for extra Xbox hard drive storage, something that is currently impossible. I originally thought they meant that they were asking about using the Zune to play music through the Xbox but the second question mentions that usage scenario. This might be a slip up, but it also might be a great way to add storage to an Xbox for relatively cheap.
The Xbox 360 just gained Netflix high-def streaming capability but a small issue has arisen concerning HDCP and compatible displays. It seems that these high-def files are protected by the copy protection, but no fear, it has nothing to do with component video – and never did. You see, HDCP was devised to protect digital audio and video content that travels over digital mediums such as DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, GVIF, and UDI. Since component video is an analog signal, the movies, will of course stream just fine.
However, if you have a LCD monitor or older HDTV – say, pre-2005 – your display has a DVI port that might not be HDCP compatible; some were and some were not back then. So users can either revert back to component video or utilize a VGA adapter. True, you will be losing your 100% digital signal and the switch might mess up your whole wiring scheme if the gaming system is within a home theater setup, but at least you will be able to stream HD Netflix movies.
HD Netflix streaming just dropped on the Xbox 360 and while the reviews have so far been stellar, a little issue just appeared in the form of copy protection. It seems in order to stream the HD videos, the Xbox 360 must be connected to a HDCP-compatible display, therefore alienating most owners using DVI-equipped screens. The situation doesn’t come as much as a surprise though now that consumers have instant access to high-quality videos via a very hackable device like the Xbox 360. It just would have been nice of Netflix to give a little heads up.
We have all had poorly shipped packages, but apparently Microsoft has had enough with DHL’s piss-pore shipping; specifically after a whole train derailed destroying 21,600 Xbox 360s. The suit is seeking $2 million in total damages due to the October 13, 2007 incident. It seems that we here in the States would not have noticed an inventory shortage as these units were destined for Hong Kong. Which so happens to be a struggling market for the console.
Ooh la la, will you look at this? There’s an Xbox stuffed in that little white case. A modder over on the Xbox Scene forums turned his big, fat, portly Xbox into a svelte, nimble “Xbox Slim” and added some key upgrades: slim DVD/CD-R drive, 60GB 2.5-inch hard drive, Logitech wireless controller, integrated Wi-Fi connection, and more.
Got some bad news for those wanting to get in some COD4 action after work; Xbox Live is down. It just kind of stopped working and the only word comes from the Xbox 360 support site without any indication on when it will be back up.
Status:
Users will not be able to connect or log into Xbox LIVE. We are aware of the problem and working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
So yeah, hopefully it comes back soon or you might be forced to do something radical…like go outside. I know, crazy talk.
Update 1: Looks like Live goes up and then crashes seconds later. Yay Microsoft!
